Context
The Base app is Coinbase's all-in-one gateway to the onchain economy, enabling users to discover, trade, earn, send money, and interact with applications and other users.
As part of the Base team, I designed UX motion across onboarding, transactions, and navigation while contributing reusable motion patterns and components that balanced clarity, trust, and brand expression.
Challenge
The Base app introduced new interaction paradigms that combined social experiences with financial transactions, allowing users to discover content, purchase digital assets, and transfer funds.
The challenge was to reduce uncertainty, communicate system feedback, and reinforce confidence during high-stakes financial transactions through scalable motion patterns designed to grow with the product.
Getting Started
Onboarding animations introduced new features progressively, reducing friction and reinforcing confidence as users began exploring the app.
Confident Transactions
The Base app introduced new ways to purchase, trade, and transfer digital assets, making continuous feedback essential.
Motion communicated transaction progress and reinforced confidence during moments of uncertainty. From pay via double tap, trade via a button swipe, and send money via a phone bump, each interaction clearly indicated when assets were being committed, processed, and successfully transferred.
Learning the Interface
Motion introduced the Base app's new navigation model by drawing attention to key interface elements and encouraging exploration.
Micro-interactions provided immediate feedback that reinforced each action, making the experience feel responsive, intuitive, and easy to learn.
Scaling Motion
Reusable motion patterns, components, interactive assets, and behaviors established consistency across the product while enabling teams to build new features on a shared motion foundation.
Brand Expression
Motion introduced moments of delight that reflected the Base brand while remaining purposeful and integrated into the overall product experience.
Design Process & Impact
I partnered closely with product, engineering, and research teams to prototype interactions, validate motion behaviors, and translate concepts into production-ready interactive assets.
Many of the reusable interactions were delivered as interactive Rive assets, enabling engineers to integrate production-ready experiences while allowing product designers to own and iterate on the final look and feel.
The resulting motion system improved consistency across onboarding, navigation, and financial interactions while providing reusable patterns and assets that accelerated implementation and helped the Base app evolve with a cohesive motion language.
Key Takeaway
Designing motion for the Base app reinforced that effective product motion extends beyond animation—it shapes product behavior. By combining interaction design with scalable motion systems, I helped make complex onchain experiences feel intuitive, trustworthy, and expressive.
