Designing Motion for Google Search Immersives

Designing the motion system that helped Google Search scale immersive experiences across Images, Movies, Flights, Shopping, Google Compare, and Travel.

Context

Google Search Immersives introduced app-like destinations for specific topics, allowing users to explore rich content without leaving Search. At the same time, Google was introducing Material Design, making motion a fundamental part of Google's design system for the first time.

I designed the UX motion for complete Google Images and Movies North Star prototypes and created a comprehensive motion specs site that aligned product, design, and engineering before implementation.

Challenge

The challenge was to translate Material Design's motion principles into a cohesive interaction system for Google Search. Transitions, loading, navigation, and scrolling needed to feel intuitive while remaining consistent across multiple Search experiences.

Loading

The Google Images prototype introduced Google's first dominant-color placeholder loading experience.

Working closely with engineering, I helped develop a system that used dominant-color extraction as a visual preview before full images loaded, improving perceived performance across varying network conditions.

Navigating

I designed transitions connecting search results, immersive destinations, and detailed content, preserving spatial context as users moved between views. The same interaction patterns scaled across Images and Movies.

Scrolling

I designed scroll-to-collapse and swipe-to-dismiss behaviors that progressively revealed or dismissed interface chrome, keeping content in focus while preserving spatial context and access to navigation.

North Star Prototypes

The Google Images and Movies prototypes demonstrated complete journeys from loading content through navigating immersive views and returning to search results, allowing teams to evaluate product behavior before implementation.

Impact

I documented the motion system through a comprehensive motion specs site covering user journeys, edge cases, and implementation guidance.

The site became a reference for Google Search Immersives, enabling teams behind Flights, Shopping, Google Compare, and Travel to build new experiences on a shared motion foundation.
